Exploring Tenerife’s Coast by Self-Drive Boat
There is a specific moment that defines the self-drive boat experience in Tenerife. It happens about ten minutes after you leave Puerto Colón. The noise of the marina fades away, the jet skis are distant specks, and suddenly, silence. You kill the engine, look over the side, and realize the water is so clear you can see the volcanic rock formations ten meters below.
No captain telling you where to look. No strangers crowding your personal space. Just you, the Atlantic Ocean, and total autonomy.
Is It Really Legal to Drive Without a License?
This is the most common question we receive at Discover Tenerife Excursions, and the answer lies in a specific nuance of Spanish Maritime Law. The regulations allow any adult (18+) to operate a recreational vessel during daylight hours, provided the boat meets specific engineering criteria:
- The boat must be under 5 meters in length.
- The engine must not exceed 15 horsepower (11.26 kW).
- You must stay within 2 nautical miles of a port or shelter.
Because our fleet is custom-tuned to meet these exact specifications, you get the thrill of captaining your own vessel without the weeks of study required for a "Patrón" license. It is 100% legal, insured, and safe.
Do not forget your physical ID. The Guardia Civil (Coast Guard) patrols these waters strictly. While you do not need a boat license, you must have your original Passport or National ID card on board. Photos on your phone are not accepted as valid documentation.
The Insider's Route: Where to Drop Anchor
You have the boat for 3 or 4 hours—where should you go? Most tourists just drive in circles, but to get the true "Discovery" experience, we recommend heading North.
1. Diego Hernández (Spaghetti Beach)
Bypass the busy Fañabé beaches and head toward La Caleta. Just past the village, you will find a pristine bay with white sands, known as Diego Hernández. This is a protected marine environment. The water here turns a brilliant turquoise, indistinguishable from the Caribbean. It is the perfect spot to deploy the swim ladder and snorkel.
2. The Cetacean Zone
Tenerife is one of the few places on Earth with a resident colony of Pilot Whales. While regulations strictly prohibit chasing them or getting too close (you must maintain a 60-meter distance), these gentle giants are curious. Often, if you simply cut your engine and drift silently, they will surface nearby. It is a magical, humbling experience that feels worlds apart from the crowded whale-watching catamarans.
Mastering the Vessel
Don't be intimidated by the controls. These boats use a standard steering wheel and a single lever for throttle (gas) and gear shifting. Push forward to go, pull back to reverse, and leave it in the middle for neutral. Before you leave the dock, our team provides a comprehensive briefing on navigation, safety equipment, and how to use the anchor.
